The owners of this charming Glen Iris property knew it was time to update their home to meet current and future needs. Inspired by the changing demands of a household entering a new phase of life, this home renovation promised a more functional layout that would better suit the activities and needs of each family member, enhance privacy and create space for time together. To preserve the backyard area they all loved, the floor plan was expanded vertically, adding a new level to the home in order to give them the extra living space their changing lifestyle required. Engaging an experienced heritage home builder ensured the new additions complemented the existing residence and also satisfied council regulations. The upgrade not only improved the home’s street appeal but was also designed to add contemporary comfort, while preserving the property’s period-style architecture.

CUSTOMISED SPACES FOR GROWTH

This thoughtfully executed renovation and custom second storey extension over-delivered on the family’s expectations. Spacemaker expanded the original floor area of the home from 205sqm to 286sqm by building a new upper floor, so the building footprint on the block remains the same. This has created a spacious second level with two generous bedrooms, a full bathroom, a separate powder room and a retreat designed as a ballet studio for the homeowner’s daughter. We also integrated another bathroom into the existing ground floor space along with a stairwell that creates a clear transition to the new level above. Both the upgraded ground floor and new second storey maintain unity and authenticity, paying homage to the home’s period-style character with classic detailing. The result is a modern home that balances heritage charm and kerbside appeal while suiting the Melbourne family lifestyle.

Extending outwards would have sacrificed precious outdoor space on the small plot, so we chose to build upward, which proved to be the ideal solution. Preserving the backyard and garden area was a priority for the owners, so we added a second storey to significantly increase usable living space. The new upper-floor retreat, used as a ballet studio by their daughter, has not only become a favourite room but also provides a private, dedicated space for recreation and personal growth.
